Swing!!

This past Sunday. I was asked to shoot a swing dance performance at pier 54 in Manhattan. The David Berger Jazz Orchestra was playing accompanied by the fabulous Champian Fulton.

More after the jump...

When I arrived, I was under the impression that people were there to see the professional swing dancers that would be arriving. Much to my surprise, this was not really the case. The focus of the event was on swing dance lessons and letting the general public dance their hearts out.

My goals at the beginning of the day were drastically different from my goals at the end of the day. I had shown up planning on getting some great images of swing dancers doing their aerial tricks that most people would bust a hip trying.

When it was time for the dancers to show up though, I was nowhere close to being in a good position to shoot. And to make matters worse, the crowd had collapsed to a circle around the dance floor with me being about 3 rows back.

So I tried my best to get shots with the camera 2 feet over my head, but it is not really a tactic that works well. I got about 3 decent images, but nothing I am thrilled with.

So after that, my dreams were crushed. I had arrived with a vision and come nowhere close to it. But I felt the need to try to get something decent out of the evening.

Another photographer at the event was Laura Sage. After a few minutes cooling off, I followed her toward the band's stage and took part in the picture snapping madness. I figured I could get something satisfactory from the nice directional light on the stage.

And then came Champian.

I don't know if I have ever felt such a strong desire to capture amazing images of a person before.

Up on that stage, she owned it. Between her eyes, that smile, and the way you could see her feeling the music, she was totally captivating.

I believe I took about 250 pictures of just her. Considering I took only 400 pictures the entire night, that is quite a feat. I think out of the 250, I got 5 that I really like. In addition, I got some shots of the band that I really love. And to top it all off, I got 3 shots of beautiful sunsets. One of which is of the beautiful star of the night herself.

See the rest of the images here.
